Arthritis is a term that includes a group of disorders that affect your joints and muscles. The symptoms include joint pain, inflammation, redness of skin around a joint, stiffness and limited movement of joints. There are over 100 different forms of arthritis, the most common being osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), which is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. Other forms of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and related autoimmune diseases. Blood tests and X-rays can confirm arthritis and the condition can be managed through a combination of medication, exercise, rest, weight-management, nutrition and, in some cases, surgery. Various Surgical interventions are available for arthritis depending on the severity of patient’s condition and the doctor’s assessment. Highly specialised orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists and physiotherapists use computer assisted orthopaedic surgery techniques for maximum long term effectiveness
Joint replacement surgeries are orthopaedic procedures in which the patient’s arthritic or dysfunctional joint is replaced with an orthopedic prosthesis. The KGMH joint replacement team provides state-of-the-art surgical care employing up-to-date techniques for the treatment.
Total knee replacement or ‘Arthroplasty’ is realigning of the joint (bone end surfaces) with artificial parts called Prostheses. This has a new design called High Flexion Knees permitting near complete range of movement.
The surgery re-forms the hip joint, replacing the arthritic hip joint, thus eliminating the pain-causing damaged bearing surfaces. In the 1960s, the metal ball and plastic socket for replacement of the hip joint was introduced. There are two major types of Total Hip Replacements: a cemented prosthesis and an un-cemented prosthesis. Both are widely used. The artificial components used today are stronger, made of chrome, cobalt, titanium or ceramic materials, and come in various shapes and designs.
